181 Fremont skyscraper in San Francisco featuring first thyssenkrupp elevators for emergency evacuations in the U.S. named a Best Tall Building Award winner

181 Fremont in San Francisco, engineered to be the most resilient structure on the West Coast of North America, has been named a Best Tall Building Award winner in the 200-299-meter category at the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, which is being held April 8-10 in Shenzhen, China.

The Best Tall Building Award recognizes projects that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings, enhancing cities and the lives of their inhabitants, as well as supporting sustainability. 181 Fremont receives the award for its pioneering approach to safety and sustainability.

The Occupant Evacuation Operation (OEO) enabled elevators were designed and installed by thyssenkrupp Elevator, a global leader in urban mobility with an extensive tall-building footprint that includes One World Trade Center in New York City, home of the fastest elevators in the Western Hemisphere. In contrast to conventional elevators, OEO elevators are able to operate during an emergency, facilitating a faster and more efficient evacuation by combining the use of stairwells and elevators and better accommodating those whose mobility is restricted. OEO elevators are built with safeguards that protect against water, heat and smoke from getting into the elevator lobby or hoistway. In the event of a power outage, these elevators can run on backup power.

Developed by Jay Paul Company, 181 Fremont is the tallest mixed-use tower West of the Mississippi.

The impressive structure features 410,000 square feet of office space, 74 luxury condos on the top 15 floors, retail space on the fifth floor and a 5.4-acre rooftop park. Facebook will be among the high-profile tenants that will call 181 Fremont home.

Fourteen of the 17 elevators installed at 181 Fremont boast OEO capability and will operate during emergencies to evacuate occupants.

Representatives from 181 Fremont’s developer and architect – Jay Paul and Heller Manus, respectively – will present at the Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, with a sole winner in the category being selected by a small panel of judges. The building is one of only a handful of buildings in the U.S. to be recognized with an Award of Excellence Award this year.
