181 Fremont, featuring OEO enabled elevators from thyssenkrupp, recognized as Award of Excellence winner at Tall + Urban Innovation Conference

SHENZHEN, CHINA (April 8, 2019) – 181 Fremont in San Francisco, the only building in North America to feature Occupant Evacuation Operation (OEO) enabled elevators, has been named a Best Tall Building Award winner in the 200-299-meter category at the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, which is being held April 8-10 in Shenzhen, China.

Developed by Jay Paul Company, 181 Fremont is the tallest mixed-use tower West of the Mississippi.

The OEO enabled elevators were designed and installed by thyssenkrupp Elevator, a global leader in urban mobility with an extensive tall-building footprint that includes One World Trade Center in New York City, home of the fastest elevators in the Western Hemisphere.

Representatives from 181 Fremont’s developer and architect – Jay Paul and Heller Manus, respectively – will present at the Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, with a sole winner in the category being selected by a small panel of judges. The building is one of only a handful of buildings in the U.S. to be recognized with an Award of Excellence Award this year.

The Best Tall Building Award recognizes projects that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest level. The Best Tall Building Award also recognizes projects that enhance the cities and the lives of their inhabitants.

Fourteen of the 17 elevators installed at 181 Fremont boast OEO capability, which means the elevators are designed to operate during emergencies to evacuate occupants. The 800foot-high office and residential building includes office space, luxury condos as well as retail space.

OEO enabled elevators are designed to provide the most efficient and quickest evacuation during emergencies by combining the use of stairwells and elevators. OEOs also provide greater peace of mind by reducing the panic and confusion commonly associated with a building evacuation, while also better accommodating those challenged by age, health or restricted mobility. Another benefit of OEO systems is revenue-based; by eliminating a third egress stairwell there is more usable/rentable space available.

At last year’s Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, thyssenkrupp’s rope-less and sidewaysmoving elevator, MULTI, won the Innovation Award.
