Balustrade

The balustrade is the side of the escalator which extends above the steps. This part is exclusive to escalators and essential for their safe and seamless operation.

The balustrade includes the skirt panels, interior panels, the deck and the handrail. These parts are made of various materials, but glass and metal are the most common.

The ultimate goal of the balustrade is to act as a barrier to keep passengers safely on the escalator steps while they are in motion.

It may come as a surprise to many that the balustrade can be dated back to ancient history as they were often used to prevent people from falling off higher structures such as balconies and rooftop terraces.

As the idea and invention of the escalator came into view, the balustrade was seen as a must-have for secure operation.
