Basement/Adjacent Machine Room

A machine room holds all of the equipment needed to power a traction elevator.

This room will hold the elevator’s drives and controllers along with other critical gear. The standard placement for a machine room is directly above the hoistway, but it can also be located in the basement or adjacent to the hoistway on a higher level if building architecture requires.

The decision to place your machine room in the basement or adjacent to the hoistway can often be determined by your local building code or even the design of the elevator itself.
