Counterweights are only used for traction elevator applications. A counterweight is an added weight that gives balance to the elevator system and makes it simpler to raise and lower the cab, which reduces the effort required by the lifting machine.
The weight of an elevator cab (structural load) plus part of the passenger load (40 to 50% of its rated load) determines the weight of the counterweights. The weights travel up and down in the opposite direction from the elevator cab. Counterweights are housed in the elevator shaft — either on the side or rear of the elevator cab, depending on door openings.
Counterweights are essential to the function of a traction elevator whether it has a machine room or it’s machine room-less (MRL).
