Handrail

When the very first escalator debuted at Coney Island as a theme park attraction in 1892, it was clear that this novel moving staircase would need a new handrail to match. Its inventors wanted to see escalators evolve with safety at the forefront of their research. This is how the moving handrail design came to life.

To be perfectly aligned with the stairs beneath it at all times, the handrail’s speed is synchronized with the moving steps. Using easy-to-grip materials like synthetic rubber or thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), these handrails are designed to help passengers keep their balance during the duration of their ride.

Many vertical transportation companies also provide an option to install LED sanitizing modules to ensure that the handrail is consistently sanitized for reduced microbe transmission.
